Hey guys, Dr. Jon Dandridge here from Beyond Bones, I want to take you guys on a bit of a thought experiment. Come with me visualize this with me. And Hey guys, Dr. John, the engineer from Beyond Bones, I want to take you on a bit of a thought experiment.
It is really important to understand stress, that’s the purpose of this, and how it impacts us globally, how it impacts our entire physiology and the health that we have in our entire body. Okay, oftentimes we think about stress is this thing that’s kind of just out there, we’re not exactly sure how it impacts our body and, and the true effects that it has. But with this simple thought experiment, I’m gonna take you on a bit of a, of a journey here. Follow along with me, I think you’ll really understand it.
So if we think back 1000s, and 1000s, and 1000s of years ago, when human beings were less civilized, we didn’t have all the modern day technology we have now. And if we were in nature, wild, right wild nature, and there was a predator that was approaching, we’re going to start to feel threatened, right, we’re going to start to feel threatened, and our bodies are going to change our physiology is going to physically change how it’s going to change to help us escape that threat. Whatever that is a lion, a tiger, whatever. So it’s going to change to help us physically, either fight or flight. That’s actually one of the states of our nervous system that we can be in fight or flight. It’s designed to help us escape a problem, a threat. And our physiology changes in a number of ways. We’ll go over in a minute. The opposite is that let’s say we escape the threat. The Lions chasing us and we make it out safe, everything’s good. And we’re we’ve returned to safety. So our body changes again. It changes again, now we’re in more of a restful state, we’re in a more calm and peaceful state. And our physiology changes, oftentimes the exact opposite way of fight or flight.
So what we see is that most people today, we live in this physiology of stress, we live in this physiology of fight or flight as if there was a lion chasing us, right? And so this changes our bodies in many ways. Number one, if we are, and this is in no particular order, but if we if we are in a stressful, dangerous situation where there’s a threat, is there any need necessarily for our bodies to put energy towards digestion? Is there any need for our bodies to put energy towards and resources? Towards reproduction? Is there any need for our bodies to put or for our brains to be able to, better show empathy towards others? Is it important to be creative? Is it important to direct blood flow to our internal organs? And the list goes on and on and the answer to all those questions is no, it’s not important. It’s not a priority. Because why? Because we are trying to escape a threat. We’re worried about the threat, all we need to do is to get away, we don’t care about digestion, at the moment, reproduction, you know, healing, well That’s not important immune system function, that’s not important. All we care about is getting away from the threat. And so unfortunately, a lot of people live that way. They live that way, year after year after year, which can create all sorts of problems as you can probably start to imagine.
What we try and do when we work with people is that we want to get them out of that state, we want to take them out of a threat, fight or flight state and into a rest and digest state. This is the parasympathetic side of our physiology. And the exact opposite is true. When we’re in a peaceful environment where there’s no threat, our bodies say, hey, you know what, we can put our energy and resources towards healing, towards reproduction, towards digestion, towards being empathetic towards others, I have time and safety to be creative, productive, all of these things become available. And we become capable of doing these things because we’re in a safe environment and we don’t perceive threat. And so what we know as chiropractors is that when our spine doesn’t move well, when our joints are unhealthy, degenerated, dysfunctional, and there is there’s very poor motion in our body, especially in our spine. This is a very stressful thing to our brain to our nervous system because we were made to move we were made to move freely without tension, stress and compression. And so as we start to work with people and we start to free up their spine, we start to liberate it, allowing it to move more freely, the quality and the quantity of motion that it has improves. This is a very good thing for our our health, our brain and our nervous system. Love it when we can move with ease And this begins to bring us out of a stress state into a rest and digest a more peaceful state.
If you can just think back about that, the list that I gave you. And that wasn’t an exhaustive list, it was just kind of the tip of the iceberg. But you can just imagine how our health can change if we start to, to just make that switch away from stress into rest, right. And it’s really, really cool to see what happens because our bodies really and truly are always fighting for us, to keep us well to keep us thriving and functioning at our, at an optimal way, in an optimal way at our best, right. And so, if that resonates with you, if you if you feel like you’ve been living in that way, and that stressed out state for a long amount of time, we want to talk to you reach out to us, we’re always open for a conversation.
We’d love to speak with you about that understand more about you your goals and objectives and we could talk about how we can help you achieve this. Thanks so much for listening and have a great one!
